things seems to be calm these last few weeks. talk of anni being released due to local and international pressure is in the air but i highly doubt this. if a foreign country was going to help anni they would have done so already. I am ashamed of the UK government for not stepping in. Then again as long as big UK hotel chains and corporations like Cable and Wireless are sucking the money out of this country i see no reason why they would step in and fight for an individuals right. so here is how it works the European tourists pump in millions of dollars in to this economy through tourism, yes great.. fantastic. But most of these hotels are partly owned by foreign companies so majority of the money leaves this countries economy. The few Maldivian business people who have shares in the resort have invested outside this country so the money flows out of this country once more. Majority of the staff in most resorts are foreigners so once again the money flows out of our economy. the portion of the money that actually gets in to the economy gets further more sucked by dhiraagu, the sole telecom operator partly owned by UK based Cable & Wireless. so now you see the food chain and why no foreign government would help the people of this country or any country if you think about it... oh what the hell..
Slowly but surely this country is sinking on its own weight. It is highly expensive to float an empire. Most of the top jobs have been given to big corporate business people, while completely disregarding all the ethical and moral values. This is done by the very person who shameless gave number of interviews on international and national media about reform. How can one talk of reform while slowly infecting the very root of this country. Economically the country is in dire condition, these business/politicians need to stuff their accounts while there is something left of this economy...Maldives will "sink".
Its been a year since I have been writing this blog and what has changed? Nothing except a rearrangement of a bunch of ministers and top officials. At a fundamental level nothing has really changed. i am not talking about high raised buildings and paved roads i am talking about peoples thinking, their ideologies, educations, dreams, freedom, rights.. i can go on.. I am not talking about a change to some grand narrative of this country but on a very simple individual, personal level. It was wrong for us to think that change was going to be easy. it was wrong for MDP to give us the illusion that this would be a "cake walk". their rhetoric’s needs to change. this is a fight a sacrifice that people of this country needs to take and the fight is going to be a long and hard one. once again i do not support mdp and i am not even a member of mdp nor any other political party but as you can see without a doubt i want this administration to change. for a year i have been talking about a need to force the government to allow the atoll chiefs and island chiefs to be elected by the people of their respective area. i don’t understand why the mps and the opposition are not pushing for this. i think it is foolish for the opposition to try and bring down an elected president by the people rather would it not make much sense to try and change these selected cronies. sometimes i don’t know who these opposition figures work for.
